  6. Installation Notes
  7. ------------------

  9. To install NovaDisk+ for Windows 95/98/NT, run the file "SETUP.EXE" from
  10. the installation diskette.  Simply type:
  11.  
  12.     a:\setup        (If your 3.5" floppy drive is assigned as
  13.              disk a:)
  14. or
  15.     b:\setup        (If your 3.5" floppy drive is assigned as
  16.              disk b:)

  19. To install from CD, run the file "SETUP.EXE" from the root
  20. directory of your CD, or, if auto-insert notification is enabled,
  21. the SETUP.EXE program will auto-run.

  23. Files are compressed, the install program MUST be run for a
  24. successful installation.

  64. How to Change the Main Menu Bitmaps
  65. -----------------------------------

  67. All NovaStor backup products now allow for the customization
  68. of the two bitmaps on the main screen.  You can simply create and
  69. use your own bitmap using Paintbrush (or similiar program that can
  70. edit/create Windows bitmap files).  This can be accomplished by
  71. naming your bitmaps DRAGON.BMP to replace the Logo and LOGO.BMP to
  72. replace the NovaStor Logo. Happy Painting!

  76. NovaBoot and Multiple OS Partition Warning
  77. ------------------------------------------
  78.  
  79. The NovaBoot Utility provides for disaster recovery for the active
  80. operating system at the time of backup. It is used to recover 
  81. files that are "visible" at the time of backup. Though this may
  82. seem obvious, it is important to know that if you have your
  83. hard disk(s) partitioned to include other operating systems and
  84. files that are not accessible for backup, then these also cannot
  85. be recovered with the use of NovaBoot. In short, NovaBoot does NOT  
  86. provide strict image recovery (sector by sector data restoration).

  90. Special Notes
  91. -------------

  93.                                * FAT32 SUPPORT *
  94.  
  95. You can determine if you have FAT32
  96. support if, when you right-click "My Computer" and choose "Properties",
  97. the system reports a version number of 4.00.950b or greater.  FAT32
  98. is only enabled on your system when you 1) Choose FAT32 support when
  99. running FDISK, AND 2) Create a partition greater than 512Mb in size.
  100.         NovaDisk+ and NovaBoot for Windows 95/98/NT has full support for
  101. FAT32.  No special configurations or parameters need to be made.

  104.                            * THE REGISTRY AND YOU *
  105.  
  106.         You will notice that if you attempt to restore your registry
  107. (either Windows 95/98 or NT) that NovaDisk+/NovaBoot will warn you numerous
  108. times.  This is because should _ANYTHING_ go wrong during the registry
  109. restore, your system will be corrupted and potentially un-bootable.
  110. Certain precautions should be followed when restoring your registry
  111. depending on whether it is an NT or 95/98 registry:
  112.         Windows 95/98: Ensure any and all programs are stopped.  Double and
  113. triple check the task list via CTRL-ALT-DEL and removing any running
  114. programs except EXPLORER and NovaDisk+ (if running).  If your machine is
  115. networked, make sure nobody attempts to utilize your resources.  You
  116. may even wish to go as far as to remove the networking cable from the
  117. back of the machine (please contact your SysAdmin first!!!!).
  118.         Windows NT: Ensure any and all programs are stopped.  Stop as
  119. many services as possible, especially server services such as SQL, RAS,
  120. DNS, WINS, TCPIP, etc.  You do not want anyone logging onto the machine
  121. in question while the registry restore is in process.
  122.         Don't be afraid to restore your registry, just be aware of the
  123. potential dangers.  Of course, you will want a current NovaBoot Disaster
  124. Recovery backup handy just in case things go wrong.

  127.                           * NOVABOOT FOR WINDOWS 95/98 *
  128.  
  129.         Please note that NovaDisk+ backup sets CANNOT be used with
  130. the NovaBoot disaster recovery utility diskettes.  You MUST use
  131. the NovaBoot utility to create a special backup set which can be
  132. recovered in a DOS-based configuration.  If you attempt to use a
  133. NovaDisk+ backup set with the Novaboot disaster recovery diskettes,
  134. your system will not have it's long filenames restored and will be,
  135. essentially, unusable.
  136.         You only need to re-create the disaster recovery floppies
  137. when your system hardware changes.
  138.

  140.                           * NOVABOOT FOR WINDOWS NT *
  141.  
  142.         NovaBoot operates complete different for Windows NT than
  143. it does for Windows 95/98.  Our research and development department
  144. has yet been unable to determine a reliable way to boot Windows
  145. NT from floppy diskettes.  Because of this limitation, NovaBoot
  146. cannot restore a full system from a floppy-based boot-up procedure
  147. as it can for Windows 95/98.  Thus, NovaBoot utilizes other methods
  148. to help you recover from a full system disaster.  NovaBoot (by
  149. your direction) will create four sets of diskettes to cover the
  150. most common disasters:
  151.  
  152.         1) Boot manager fix diskette: You can use this diskette to
  153.            fix your boot manager should you become unable to boot
  154.            your system from the hard drive.  You only need create
  155.            this diskette once
  156.  
  157.         2) Emergency Repair Diskette (ERD): This diskette contains
  158.            the imporant information about your system.  Should your
  159.            system become completely un-bootable, you can use the
  160.            ERD diskette, in conjunction with the NT boot manager,
  161.            to re-build your system so it can boot.  This diskette
  162.            should be updated on a fairly frequent basis.

  164.         3) NT Setup Diskettes: These diskettes allow you the
  165.            ability to re-install your NT system should a complete
  166.            system disaster occur (such as corrupted partition, etc).
  167.            If this should happen, use these diskettes to install
  168.            a basic NT system to the hard drive and utilize the next
  169.            set of disks to recover your system.  You only need to
  170.            re-build these diskettes when you updated your version
  171.            of Windows NT.

  173.         4) Restore Diskettes: These diskettes contain the necessary
  174.            programs to restore your system after a complete system
  175.            disaster.  You would insert your disaster recovery backup
  176.            set in the necessary location and run the NTDATA program
  177.            from the first diskette to start the system recovery
  178.            process.  You only need to re-build these diskettes when
  179.            your system hardware changes.

  182.                    * SECURITY INFORMATION BACKUPS (NT ONLY) *
  183.  
  184.         Depending on your system configuration, you can have special
  185. security configurations for files, drives and/or subdirectories.
  186. NovaDisk+ and NovaBoot have full support for this information.  This
  187. data is backed up each time you backup your NT registry.  Please note
  188. that this information will ONLY be restored if you restore your NT
  189. registry, it is not stored on a file-by-file basis due to potential
  190. security issues.  Please see the section above "THE REGISTRY AND YOU"
  191. before attempting a registry restore.
